Today was my ceramics department critique for the semester. I typically enjoy critiques and all the questions that they leave you with. As an artist even in graduate school I sometimes fell trapped in my own space and I appreciate when others come in to visit, observe, and question. I realize for the most part I do this to myself but I have found that I need to eliminate the distractions for me to be productive. Few people visit my space other then those I schedule studio visits with and in those situations I am one-on-one. To be honest, in today's critique I felt a little overwhelmed everyone was asking good questions but can there ever be to many questions? My brain feels like a pile of scattered leaves with questions everywhere. What was most important? Where will I go from here? Only time will tell.

Following my critique I made a list of things that were missing as they relate to my 30 days project. As I move forward to plan is to complete them and fulfill the need as it presents itself. I am also going to further consider the design, function, and surface of the three primary vessels.

30 Days Project Part II: Day 5: dish set

Wondering what this project is all about? Check out my first post for Day 1 to get the back story.
30 Days Dish Set.
Today I had a studio visit with one of my committee members and I really began thinking about these vessels and how they have functioned during the start of this project. What I have enjoyed about using them and what has caused me frustration. Starting with the cup, I made it extra big with the intent to drink everything for one month out of this single cup, I wanted it to be big enough to hold the maximum amount of liquid it might need it to hold. The finished cup is a little to wide for my hand, when I grab it from the tabletop my hand does not feel comfortable. The happy spot is a little below where it needs to be. Do you have a favorite cup? What makes it your favorite? Do you use it or simply look at it? The bowl has functioned quite well but the handle has to much volume and I think it would create a better grip for my hand if it was smaller. I have most enjoyed using the plate but it has a few marks on the top from the kiln firing. The handle has the proper fit for my hand and it has a comfortable weight with and without food.

Moving forward, I am going to continue making and thinking about what objects I need. From a berry bowl to the bubble tea straw. At the end of the 30 days my goal is to have a collection of objects that all relate to my daily use and their specific function within my life.
Breakfast smoothies with friends.
Lunch at the studio.
Bubble tea, straws coming soon.
Todays GOOD NEWS: while getting bubble tea we found out that you get a 10% discount for bringing your own cup. How awesome. I think I have convinced Gun Young to bring her own cup next time!

Now that I am thinking of creating vessels with a specific function in my life I had better make a better cup for bubble tea, and I think it needs a lid. Let the making continue…

30 Days Project Part II: Day 4: growing lettuce

Wondering what this project is all about? Check out my first post for Day 1 to get the back story.
My Lettuce Crop.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner… It is amazing how much of a shift occurs in what I am eating during the week as opposed to the weekend, where I have time to cook. Does anyone else feel the same way??? My week day meals are typically filled with sandwiches- I do love them and lots of leftovers. Today was breakfast as usual with homemade yogurt. Lunch included a special treat and was eaten in class, details below. During the week I am usually rushing and rarely have time to sit down and eat lunch on Mon/Wed so I eat at the start of class. I was excited to have a salad with the lettuce that we grew for class but I was a little disappointed I wasn't able to finish one of my salad plates in time to eat the first crop. And that I had not brought my dish set with me to eat off. I have been cautiously carrying my dishes to and from home and I decided I did not want to bring them to class until I had a proper caring case. I plan to build a case to house my dish set for easy, convenient, and most importantly SAFE transportation. I wish would have thought about this before I started the project but I guess part of this piece is that it develops as the need arises. I had dinner at the studio after getting out of my evening class. To be honest, I usually eat dinner out of the Pyrex container I bring it to school in. It is simple and requires I only wash one dish. It was a nice shift eating off my dish set even if it means washing a few more dishes.
Breakfast smoothie and homemade yogurt.
Lunch.
Greenhouse class salads.

Leftover Dinner.
I am taking a greenhouse propagation course this semester in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science with Dr. Peg McMahon a knowledgeable and truly inspiring teacher. I am learning all of the basics of greenhouse propagation and have grown from seed in soil as well as hydroponically. The lettuce in the hydroponic system was ready to harvest so today in class we all had a salad. I am currently working on a set of salad dishes for my person lettuce crop that is doing really well.

needed to come inside.
Ever since the bubble tea I have had my mind set on making some glass straws. My friend Jon in the glass department offered to help me out. I should have some straws by late this week. I am sure this will mean another trip to bubble tea. Like I always say "you can never have to much bubble tea!" -Thanks for reading jeni

30 Days Project Part II: Day 3: wine glass

Wondering what this project is all about? Check out my first post for Day 1 to get the back story.
Breakfast smoothy.
A quick lunch.
Dinner: roasted beets, oranges, in a vinaigrette.
Today was a busy adventure. Breakfast was the usual smoothy- straws coming soon! I was overcome with hunger before I was able to eat my lunch and I ate a whole pack of raspberries. They did not even make it for a photo. Hunger did not allow me to wait. Up next I need to make a berry bowl that will allow me to wash and strain the fruit. Since I was a child when anyone would ask me my favorite food I would always answer fruit. I love fruit strawberries and watermelon are at the top of the list.

I have been thinking about it for a while but I would like to make a set of wares used for cheese making and after last nights reminder I think I will add it to my list. A big thank you to my friend Boryana Rusenova Ina for teaching me! This will include a small colander and a weight to place over top to compress the cheese. Dinner was amazing roasted beets from the farmers market with peeled oranges and a vinaigrette. The wine glasses came out of the kiln today so I could not resist ending my day with a glass of wine!

30 Days Project Part II: Day 2: Inniswood garden, apple pie

Wondering what this project is all about? Check out my first post for Day 1 to get the back story.

It must be fall in Ohio.
The leaves are changing colors.
Digging in the dirt.
Apple pie, yogurt, and cheese.
All in a days time.

Today was the first Saturday in four weeks that I did not have a commitment. Needless to say it has made for a busy month so today I decided to have a slow day. I went to the farmers market my usual Saturday morning activity and then decided to take a drive out to Inniswood MetroGarden. The garden had been suggested to me as they have an herb garden that includes a section of medicinal herbs. It was a pleasant morning to have a walk through the gardens. I will defiantly be back when they are in full bloom but maybe with Forrest! At the market I picked up some garlic that needed to be planted TODAY. So I headed back to the studio to tame the garden, harvest some treats, and plant the garlic.

Morning routine.
Breakfast smoothy.
Fall colors.

I found a healthy blooming Echinacea!
Garden getting a little out of control.
Garlic planting.
A little space to breath.
I have to be honest I started to get a little self conscious today about posting everything I am eating. But here it goes. I will tell you now I have a smoothie for breakfast almost everyday, not very exciting but it is very yummy. I made my cup extra big to account for shrinkage in the kiln and because with the intent to use the same cup for the whole month it needed to fit the max amount of liquid. Well now I am beginning to think that might be a little unreasonable. The cup it so big its hard to hold, I guess a smaller cup might be in order. I have plans to make a straw with Jon Capps my friend in the glass department tomorrow and maybe my wine glass will be ready.
Lunch.
Dinner: garden pesto pasta, with a few baby carrots,
and apple cider.
Homemade apple pie, yum.

30 Days Project Part II: Day 1: bubble tea

30 Days Project Part II: Day 1 Bubble Tea

Last year, I did a "30 Days Project" where I took time each day to explore the human body through movement, balance, energy, and more. Coming into graduate school I knew with 100% certainty that I was interested in the human body but I was trying to make a connection between the body and the ceramic vessel that I so enjoyed making. I was feeling at a loss and I decided to take some time to develop my work conceptually and explore the movement aspect of the body. I believe the "30 Days Project" stemmed from my frustration with the expectations of graduate school and the lack of studio time it allowed for. By taking my work outside of the studio and into my daily life I was able to create even on days that did not allow me to access the studio. And during my first year that was many days. I was happy with the project but in the end I did not find any resolution in my work, I was even more confused on what I wanted to make... what my committee wanted me to make... what I wanted to make... what my committee wanted me to make... you get the idea. Going into spring semester I got sick in my joints again, it was a flare up from the arthritis that began back in 2009. It made for a slow semesters but it gave me time to think and think I did. At the end of the term, I knew I needed to make vessels. In February, my roommates cat jumped on the table and my 'only' plate that also happen to be my favorite fell off the table, you can read about it here. I was devastated and decided I was not going to eat off any plates and for a time I used paper towels that is until my mom talked some sense into me! Silly I know, but it really got me, I love that plate for a few reasons: Forrest gave it to me as a gift, I really like Andy the maker of the plate, and I didn't realize until after the plate was gone that it had started to be more then a plate to me. I had a connection with this plate. I used it for every single meal I ate at home. This plate got me thinking about the importance of the handmade vessels.

So here we are November 1, 2013 and I am starting 30 Days Project Part II. (Oddly I started part I on November 5th, 2012.) For part II, I made a set of dishes and this set of dishes is going to travel with me and is going to be used for every meal and everything I eat and drink unless it does not require a vessel in eating an apple for example. I have also decided that as I progress through this project I will make extra pieces for the set as need be. Today, I realized that I needed a wine glass (who doesn't!) and so with the help of my friend Zac in glass I should have one out of the kiln in a few days.

I unloaded the dish set from the kiln yesterday and officially started the 30 days today. To back track a little on how this idea evolved over the summer I started and herb garden and began thinking about my interest in the human body in a different way. My interest in movement steamed from the experience with arthritis and my bodies lack of movement that created an interest and appreciation that had not been there before. Recently my interested shifted in that I became focused on what we put inside our bodies that allows for good health and in my case MOVEMENT! So the exploring began and and I have been focusing my most recent research on medicinal herbs. This project came from the broken plate and the summer garden. The plate triggered back my interest in the vessel, my garden help me see my deep connection with plants that had not been clear before, and I also found my self overly frustrated by the influx of waste on campus especially on game day and the lack of concern for trash vs. recycling or lack there of.

So today it started, included are a few pictures that follow my through my day.
